SATURDAY EVENING

6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

A "GIANTS OF JAZZ" CONCERT

A RETROSPECTIVE ON A RECORDING
WIDELY REGARDED AS
"THE ONE ALBUM TO HAVE IF STRANDED ON A DESERT ISLE."

"ELLA FITZGERALD SINGS THE COLE PORTER SONGBOOK" INAUGURATED A LENGTHY SERIES OF SONGBOOKS FOR A FLEDGLING VERVE RECORDS WHEN IT WAS RELEASED IN 1956. THE BRILLIANT COLE PORTER SONGMANSHIP WAS WELL MATCHED BY THE "FIRST LADY OF SONG" IN HER EFFORTLESS, GENTLE INTERPRETATIONS OF SUCH MASTERPIECES AS "NIGHT AND DAY",
"I LOVE PARIS",
"WHAT IS THIS THING CALLED LOVE", "I'VE GOT YOU UNDER MY SKIN", "YOU'RE THE TOP" AND "LOVE FOR SALE". COLE PORTER'S COMMENT UPON HEARING THE RECORD WAS, "MY, WHAT MARVELLOUS DICTION THAT GIRL HAS." IT WAS ACKNOWLEDGED AS A JEWEL IN VERVE'S CROWN AND WAS EASILY
THE MOST SUCCESSFUL OF ALL ELLA FITZGERALD'S FABLED SERIES OF SONGBOOKS.

IN 2000, THE ALBUM WAS INDUCTED INTO THE
GRAMMY HALL OF FAME FOR ITS
"QUALITATIVE OR HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE". IT WAS ONE OF 50 RECORDINGS
TO BE CHOSEN BY THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS (U.S.A.) TO BE ADDED TO THE NATIONAL RECORDING REGISTRY IN 2003.
