The musical firmament shines a little less brightly in Barrie-Huronia following the untimely passing of John Shand on November 2, 2006. A masterful guitarist, electric bassist and saxophonist in a number of local and regional bands, John was blessed with a quick musical mind and an exciting delivery in nearly every musical genre. John possessed an intriguing voice and vocal style which he frequently added to the shows which he performed in.

He was a long-time member of the bands "Blues Parlour" and "Wayne Buttery and The Goove Project", and he was an occassional guest artist in "Jazz-Mandhu" and "The Sons of Dublin".

Charitable of spirit and generous with his musical gifts, John would often perform on behalf of worthwhile causes, and he is pictured above performing with me for the Y.M.C.A. Immigrant Services Christmas Luncheon a number of years ago. Typical of John, he was delighted to be compensated for his art with the exotic dishes prepared by the adult students from all over the world.

John's passing has had a profound impact on those with whom he worked and performed, and the void which he has left in his friends' and fellow musicians' hearts may never be filled. That he could engender such love in others was the measure of the man.

Russ Strathdee - a saxophonist and fellow band member of John's - supplies this photograph and the following description: " ... taken during the 2004 South Side Shuffle on Bloor Street in Toronto... Charlie Hinkel and John having a private little jam when Wayne Buttery and The Groove Project performed there (along side of David Rotundo)."
